Nintendo Shadow Drops Fire Emblem Shadows, a New Smartphone Spin-Off with Social Deduction

Surprise! Nintendo has revealed Fire Emblem Shadows, a new free-to-play mobile game that is currently available.

The game was released overnight for both iOS and Android devices, combining the series' classic tactical role-playing gameplay with social deduction elements. Which one of your team of heroes is secretly a traitor? Or will you take the path of shadow yourself?

Fire Emblem Shadows is an unexpected announcement from Nintendo, which hasn't launched a new smartphone game in years, since its partnership with Pokémon Go developer Niantic back in 2021 to release Pikmin Bloom. However, Nintendo's previous Fire Emblem Heroes mobile game was highly profitable — launched in 2017 with gacha-style gameplay, it generated over $650 million within three years — so a new spin-off makes sense.

"Choose light or shadow, then engage in strategic combat featuring two disciples of light and one disciple of shadow," states the game's description. "After an initial battle, players vote to determine who they believe is the treacherous disciple of shadow. Whether the disciples of light can correctly identify the traitor — or the disciple of shadow can successfully deceive others — will influence how the next battle proceeds. Expect the unexpected and remain cautious of both enemies and allies."

Visuals display light and shadow versions of well-known characters such as Lyn, who is available during the game's launch period and can be unlocked more quickly if you upgrade to a premium version of the game’s first battle pass.
