Why NIKKE Players Felt Let Down by the Evangelion Crossover Event

Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE Evangelion crossover fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The collaboration, released in August 2024, featured Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato in designs intended to be faithful to the original anime. However, this resulted in an unexpected challenge.

The Design Dilemma:

Shift Up's initial character designs were deemed too suggestive by Evangelion's creators, necessitating revisions. While the toned-down versions satisfied the licensors, they failed to resonate with players. The resulting aesthetics, while respectful of the source material, lacked the appeal that fans expected.

Player Feedback:

The underwhelming reception wasn't solely due to the character designs. Players found little incentive to invest in limited-time characters or costumes, particularly given the lack of significant visual differences between the new skins and the base models. Asuka's gacha skin, the most expensive option, was criticized for being too similar to her default appearance.

The crossover's extended duration and uninspired designs were also criticized. Players expressed concern that recent collaborations have diluted NIKKE's established identity of bold anime aesthetics and engaging storytelling.

Looking Ahead:

Shift Up acknowledges the shortcomings and promises to incorporate player feedback into future collaborations. The hope is that future events will recapture the magic and excitement that made NIKKE popular in the first place. You can find both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE on the Google Play Store. Let's hope Shift Up delivers more compelling content in the months to come.
