Japanese Racing Classic 'F-Zero Climax' Joins Switch Online Expansion
Two classic GBA racing games from Nintendo's F-Zero franchise are speeding onto the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack! Get ready to experience the futuristic thrills of high-speed racing.
F-Zero Climax and F-Zero: GP Legend Arrive October 11, 2024
Nintendo's announcement confirms the arrival of F-Zero: GP Legend and the previously Japan-exclusive F-Zero Climax to the Switch Online + Expansion Pack on October 11th.
The F-Zero series, a cornerstone of Nintendo's racing legacy, debuted in Japan over 30 years ago (1990). Its innovative gameplay and high-speed action have garnered critical acclaim and influenced other racing franchises, notably SEGA's Daytona USA. Known for pushing the boundaries of console technology, F-Zero titles consistently ranked among the fastest racing games on retro consoles like the SNES.
Like Nintendo's Mario Kart, F-Zero challenges players to navigate treacherous tracks, overcome obstacles, and outmaneuver opponents in intense, futuristic machine battles. The series' iconic protagonist, Captain Falcon, even features as a fighter in Super Smash Bros.
F-Zero: GP Legend initially launched in Japan in 2003, followed by a worldwide release in 2004. F-Zero Climax, released in Japan in 2004, has remained region-locked until now – a 19-year wait before the release of the Switch's F-Zero 99 last year. In a past interview, F-Zero designer Takaya Imamura cited Mario Kart's popularity as a contributing factor to the F-Zero series' extended hiatus.
This October 2024 update to the Switch Online + Expansion Pack grants subscribers access to both F-Zero Climax and F-Zero: GP Legend. Prepare for intense competition across various race modes, including Grand Prix, story modes, and time trials.
