What Should James Gunn's Second DCU Movie Be? We Have Ideas

Author : Hunter Feb 28,2025

James Gunn recently updated reporters on the DC Universe's status at a DC Studios presentation. Among the revelations: Gunn is already writing the script for his next DCU directorial effort, following Superman. He's certainly busy!

While Gunn remained tight-lipped about his current project – an announcement likely post-Superman's July release – several compelling options exist. Which franchises and characters best suit Gunn's distinctive style? Which films should be prioritized as Gunn and Peter Safran build this new shared universe? Here are some strong contenders for Gunn's next DC film.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold

Despite Batman's cinematic ubiquity, Batman: The Brave and the Bold generates considerable buzz. This film will reboot Batman, introducing the DCU's Caped Crusader. Unlike recent iterations, it will focus on the Bat-family, including Bruce Wayne's son, Damian.

Uncertainty surrounds The Brave and the Bold. Development seems slow, and Andy Muschietti's directorial involvement remains questionable. Introducing a second cinematic Batman alongside Robert Pattinson's presents a significant challenge.

The DCU needs a Batman. His importance is undeniable. If Muschietti departs, Gunn stepping in to ensure a successful project makes sense (a possibility already suggested). Gunn's expertise in crafting emotional father-son narratives (seen in Guardians of the Galaxy) could translate beautifully to Bruce and Damian's story.

The Flash

The Flash is crucial to any DCU. A Justice League cornerstone, he's often central to multiverse stories. However, his live-action history is rocky. The CW series showcased a successful ensemble dynamic, while Ezra Miller's DCEU Flash faltered, resulting in a box office flop.

The Flash needs a fresh start, avoiding overused narratives like Flashpoint. The film should focus on Barry Allen (and/or Wally West), preventing Batman from overshadowing the titular character.

Gunn's talent for dynamic action and character connection (evident in the Guardians films) would greatly benefit a Flash film.

The Authority

Gunn acknowledged the challenges of adapting The Authority, citing difficulties in finding a unique angle amidst projects like The Boys.

The Authority's importance to the expanding DCU is assumed. It was among the initially announced projects, and María Gabriela de Faría's Engineer appears in Superman. The clash between the optimism of heroes like Superman and the cynicism of The Authority is a key thematic element.

Gunn's aptitude for misfit heroes and engaging team dynamics makes him a suitable choice for this project.

Amanda Waller/ARGUS Movie

Gunn mentioned setbacks for the planned Waller series. Given his commitments to Superman, Peacemaker: Season 2, and Creature Commandos, this isn't surprising. As his schedule clears, prioritizing Waller, potentially as a feature film instead of a series, might be beneficial.

Waller and ARGUS are vital to the DCU's cohesion. Their presence in Superman, Peacemaker, and Creature Commandos highlights their importance. Focusing on this element and the manipulative Waller makes narrative sense.

Batman & Superman: World's Finest

Batman v Superman underperformed despite its potential. The film's dark tone proved divisive. A team-up film showcasing Batman and Superman as allies is needed.

Gunn's style would be well-suited to this. Instead of focusing solely on The Brave and the Bold, combining Gunn's Superman with the new Batman could create a highly successful film.

Titans

The Teen Titans boast a significant fanbase and rich comic history. While Max's Titans series had flaws, it demonstrated the characters' live-action viability.

A Titans film offers a unique family dynamic compared to the Justice League. Gunn's success with the Guardians suggests he could effectively portray the Titans' dysfunctional yet loving relationships.

Justice League Dark

The DCU's "Gods and Monsters" phase and the prominence of supernatural elements suggest a focus on the supernatural side of the DC Universe. Establishing the Justice League Dark, featuring characters like Zatanna, Etrigan, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and John Constantine, is a logical step.

This team's inherent dysfunction aligns with Gunn's storytelling strengths. Including characters like Batman or Wonder Woman could broaden the appeal.
