"Evil Dead: Game Removed from Stores 3 Years Post-Launch, Servers Stay Online"
Evil Dead: The Game, the asymmetric multiplayer title inspired by the iconic action horror franchise, is no longer available for purchase following its removal from digital storefronts by its publisher. Launched in 2022 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the game received an 8/10 in IGN's review, which praised its thrilling cat-and-mouse gameplay, despite noting some rough edges reflective of the horror/comedy films it's based on.
Despite the release of a Game of the Year Edition a year after its initial launch, the game struggled to maintain player engagement. In September 2023, the planned Nintendo Switch version was canceled and further content development ceased. Now, three years after its debut, Evil Dead: The Game has been delisted, though its servers will continue to operate, allowing existing players to keep enjoying the game.
Saber Interactive, the game's developer and publisher, announced the delisting on the game’s Steam page:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The decision has been met with disappointment from the community, as evidenced by numerous negative reviews on the game's Steam page, with many players feeling that the game is now effectively defunct. The overall Steam user review rating remains 'mixed'.
One recent positive review from a player with over 380 hours of playtime poignantly stated, "The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."
Saber Interactive, known for last year's successful Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, is currently working on several other licensed movie games, including John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, and an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game. Additionally, Turok: Origins and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 are in development.
