Dragon Quest XII Details to Emerge Gradually, Creator Teases
Dragon Quest XII remains under development, with updates to be shared gradually, according to series creator Yuji Horii. During a recent livestream with his radio show group, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii confirmed that the Square Enix development team is diligently working on the project.
This is the first significant update since May 2024, following the announcements of the passing of Akira Toriyama (character designer) and Koichi Sugiyama (composer). It also comes after the departure of lead producer Yu Miyake, who transitioned to head Square Enix's mobile game division.
Recent restructuring at Square Enix and a lack of updates had fueled fan concerns about the game's potential cancellation. However, Horii's statement allays these fears, confirming Dragon Quest XII's continued development.
Initially announced during the franchise's 35th-anniversary celebration, Dragon Quest XII will be the first main series installment since 2017's Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Square Enix has recently reported that the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake surpassed sales projections, achieving 2 million units sold.
