"Dragon Age: The Veilguard Director Leaves BioWare"
Corinne Busche, the game director behind Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is set to leave EA-owned BioWare in the coming weeks, according to Eurogamer. Busche took the helm of the project in February 2022 and guided it through to its release in October of the previous year. IGN has reached out to EA for further comment on this development.
Since its launch, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has faced scrutiny over its success. Despite these concerns, Eurogamer has stated that Busche's departure will not impact the studio's operations. Busche joined BioWare in 2019 following her work at Maxis on various The Sims projects. Her role as director was pivotal in steering Dragon Age: The Veilguard to completion after a tumultuous near-decade-long development cycle, which included a significant shift from a multiplayer concept to a fully realized single-player RPG.
Eurogamer clarified that Busche's exit is not linked to the game's commercial performance. EA has yet to disclose whether Dragon Age: The Veilguard met or surpassed sales expectations, with the company set to announce its Q3 2025 financial results on February 4.
Moving forward, BioWare has confirmed that it will not produce any DLC for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Instead, the studio is shifting its focus to Mass Effect 5, which has been teased but not fully revealed yet.
In August 2023, BioWare laid off approximately 50 employees, including veteran narrative designer Mary Kirby, who had been with the company since the inception of the Dragon Age series. These layoffs occurred amidst a broader restructuring at EA, which split the company into sports and non-sports divisions. Rumors at the time suggested BioWare might be acquired, and Star Wars: The Old Republic was transitioned to a third-party developer to allow BioWare to concentrate on Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
The journey of Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been tumultuous, with the game's initial reveal in 2024 receiving negative feedback. The subsequent early gameplay reveal and the name change from Dreadwolf to The Veilguard were also met with mixed reactions. However, impressions eventually turned positive.
As fans reflect on these developments, the future of the Dragon Age series remains uncertain. The community is eager to know if BioWare will have the opportunity to create another sequel following The Veilguard.
