The first playable demo of Guns Undarkness will be available during the Steam Next Fest starting February 24, 2025. This turn-based tactical RPG brings together a stellar creative lineup, including music composition by Shoji Meguro, character design by Ilya Kuvshinov (known for his work on Ghost in the Shell), and lyrics penned by Lotus Juice, widely recognized for his contributions to Persona 3.

Shoji Meguro has been a key figure in the Japanese RPG scene since joining Atlus in 1995. He composed iconic soundtracks for the Shin Megami Tensei series and later helped define the musical identity of the Persona franchise. In 2021, he transitioned into indie development while continuing to collaborate with Atlus. Now, under the banner of Kodansha Game Creators Lab, Meguro is bringing his signature style to Guns Undarkness, a sci-fi stealth action RPG.

The game was originally unveiled at the Indie Live Expo Winter 2021 and successfully ran a Kickstarter campaign in 2022 that exceeded its stretch goals. The Steam demo offers players a chance to dive into the world of Guns Undarkness ahead of its full Early Access launch planned for later in 2025.

Inspired by Metal Gear Solid and Persona

According to its official Steam page, Guns Undarkness is described as a “turn-based tactical JRPG inspired by games like Metal Gear Solid and Persona.” Set in the year 2045, the game presents a near-future Earth teetering on the edge of collapse. Players take on the role of a member of a private military company, embarking on high-stakes missions alongside allies to uncover hidden truths and ultimately save humanity.

The gameplay blends stealth mechanics with turn-based combat. During stealth sections, players must avoid detection while navigating enemy territory. Successfully remaining undetected grants a strategic advantage when combat begins. Once engaged, battles shift to a tactical turn-based system where players command their squad, deploy firearms, and execute strategies to overcome foes.

The demo will offer approximately 20 minutes of gameplay, including a tutorial covering basic controls, battle mechanics, weapon usage, and early-game strategies. When the full Early Access version launches in Spring 2025, it will provide around 10 hours of story-driven content on PC. While no official global release date has been announced yet, fans can look forward to updates as development progresses.
