Ed Boon Hints at T-1000 Fatality and Future DLC for Mortal Kombat 1
Mortal Kombat 1's development chief, Ed Boon, recently took to social media to share an exciting glimpse of the upcoming guest character, T-1000 Terminator's Fatality, and hinted at "future DLC" for the game. This announcement coincides with the release of another guest character, Conan the Barbarian, marking a significant milestone as Boon revealed that Mortal Kombat 1 has now surpassed five million copies sold, up from the previously reported four million.
Boon shared a brief video clip showcasing one of T-1000's Fatalities, which is sure to thrill fans of Terminator 2. The Fatality features the T-1000 driving a smashed-up truck into his opponent, reminiscent of the iconic chase scene from the film where the T-1000 pursues Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator and Edward Furlong's John Connor.

The phrase "keep trucking forward with future DLC" from Boon's tweet has sparked speculation among the Mortal Kombat community. While it could refer to the imminent release of T-1000, many fans are hopeful that it hints at additional downloadable content characters beyond the current lineup.
T-1000 Terminator is the final character to be added to Mortal Kombat 1 as part of the Khaos Reigns expansion, following the inclusion of Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Amidst questions about the game's sales success and future content, fans have been curious about whether NetherRealm Studios is planning a third set of DLC characters, or a Kombat Pack 3.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm, has expressed continued confidence in the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav mentioned that the company intends to focus on just four titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them. Additionally, in September, Boon stated that NetherRealm had chosen its next project three years earlier but assured fans that support for Mortal Kombat 1 would continue "for a long time to come."
Many fans speculate that NetherRealm's next project might be the third installment in the Injustice series, although neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this. The Injustice series began with "Injustice: Gods Among Us" in 2013, followed by "Injustice 2" in 2017. Despite the expected alternation between Mortal Kombat and Injustice games, NetherRealm opted for another Mortal Kombat game with the 2023 release of Mortal Kombat 1, a soft reboot of the series.
In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Boon discussed the decision to focus on Mortal Kombat 1 instead of Injustice 3. He cited several factors, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the studio's transition to a newer version of the Unreal game engine. Mortal Kombat 11 used Unreal Engine 3, while Mortal Kombat 1 runs on Unreal Engine 4.
Boon emphasized the team's commitment to safety during the pandemic and their desire to leverage the new graphics engine. He reassured fans that the decision to develop another Mortal Kombat game was made with the intention of returning to the Injustice series in the future. When directly asked if the door was closed on Injustice, Boon firmly stated, "Not at all," confirming that the franchise is still in their plans.
