Conquer the Iconic Battle of Hulao Gate in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

The Battle of Hulao Gate, a pivotal moment in Dynasty Warriors: Origins and a challenging chapter in Chapter 2, requires strategic planning and multiple attempts. This guide outlines the steps to victory. The objective: defeat Dong Zhuo.

Initial Assault:

Begin by clearing the four enemy bases in the map's bottom right. Conquering two triggers a cutscene introducing mounted cavalry. Continue your base conquest; defeating Zhang Liao rewards you with the twin pike weapon. Once all bases are secured, assault Hulao Gate.

Facing Dong Zhuo's Forces:

The initial battle is chaotic. Prioritize protecting Cao Cao until he initiates his Grand Tactic, significantly weakening the enemy defenses.

Lu Bu's Intervention:

Dong Zhuo deploys Lu Bu. Avoid direct confrontation. Lu Bu is overwhelmingly powerful. Instead, eliminate surrounding officers to maintain morale, which Lu Bu significantly depletes. Lu Bu will eventually attack your main base (Yuan Shao). Resist the urge to pursue him; Liu Bei's forces will temporarily hold him off, giving you time to defeat Dong Zhuo. This creates a time constraint; if Liu Bei's forces retreat, and Dong Zhuo remains undefeated, Lu Bu will defeat Yuan Shao, ending the mission.

Defeating Dong Zhuo:

Once Lu Bu leaves, resupply at a conquered base if needed. Capture the northern and western bases. With all three squads poised to attack and your health restored, charge towards Dong Zhuo.

Dong Zhuo's Grand Tactics:

Dong Zhuo will employ two Grand Tactics involving fireballs. The first requires destroying two catapults. Use Musou Rage (if available) to clear the path through soldiers. Focus on eliminating soldiers and officers near the catapults and barricade. Your forces will then destroy the catapults.

The second Grand Tactic requires defeating an officer. Take the right-hand stairs; you'll encounter Diaochan (a defector fighting for Dong Zhuo). A duel with Diaochan is advantageous, though challenging, as defeating her prevents being overwhelmed by both her and the officer. Once the Grand Tactic is countered, the path to Dong Zhuo is clear. Your forces should easily overcome his weakened army. Dian Wei might even initiate a Grand Tactic, further simplifying the final encounter. Defeat Dong Zhuo to complete the mission.
