Bayonetta Turns 15: PlatinumGames Celebrates Legacy

Celebrating 15 Years of Bayonetta: A Year-Long Celebration!

PlatinumGames is commemorating the 15th anniversary of the iconic Bayonetta with a year-long celebration, expressing gratitude to fans for their enduring support. The original game, released in 2009 (Japan) and 2010 (worldwide), captivated players with its innovative design and exhilarating gameplay, establishing a legacy that spanned multiple sequels on Nintendo platforms.

Bayonetta, directed by Hideki Kamiya (renowned for Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe), introduced a powerful Umbra Witch who utilizes guns, exceptional martial arts, and magically-enhanced hair to battle supernatural foes. The game's creative premise and fast-paced action, reminiscent of Devil May Cry, garnered significant acclaim, solidifying Bayonetta's status as a leading female video game anti-hero. While Sega published the initial release across various platforms, subsequent sequels became Nintendo exclusives on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. A prequel, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, featuring a younger Bayonetta, launched on the Switch in 2023. The adult Bayonetta also made appearances as a playable character in recent Super Smash Bros. installments.

PlatinumGames recently announced a "Bayonetta 15th Anniversary Year," set for 2025, promising special announcements and events. While specifics remain scarce, the developer encourages fans to follow their social media channels for upcoming reveals.

Bayonetta's 15th Anniversary in 2025

Already, Wayo Records has unveiled a limited-edition Bayonetta music box, showcasing the original Super Mirror design and playing "Theme Of Bayonetta - Mysterious Destiny," composed by Masami Ueda (known for Resident Evil and Okami). PlatinumGames is also releasing monthly Bayonetta-themed smartphone calendar wallpapers, with January's featuring Bayonetta and Jeanne in kimonos under a full moon.

Even after 15 years, the original Bayonetta remains celebrated for its refinement of stylish action, building upon the foundation laid by Devil May Cry. Innovative mechanics like Witch Time and its influence on future PlatinumGames titles like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Nier: Automata further cement its impact. Fans eagerly anticipate further announcements throughout Bayonetta's 15th-anniversary year.
