Baldur’s Gate 3 Dev Larian Says Its 'Full Attention' Is on Its Next Game, 'Media Blackout' for the Foreseeable
Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, have announced a complete shift in focus to their next, unannounced project. The studio has implemented a media blackout, indicating a significant period of silence regarding their upcoming endeavors.
While Baldur's Gate 3 players eagerly await Patch 8 later this year, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, confirmed via Twitter and a subsequent statement to VideoGamer that the team's full attention is dedicated to this new title. Vincke's tweet expressed a sense of accomplishment regarding Baldur's Gate 3's success but hinted at future projects.
Larian has confirmed that this new game will not be a Baldur's Gate sequel or any other D&D-related project. Instead, it represents a completely original IP, a direction the studio chose after internal discussions failed to generate sufficient enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate continuation.
Previous statements from Vincke offer limited clues. In November 2023, he alluded to the next game pushing boundaries, while in July 2023, he mentioned the possibility of a future Divinity: Original Sin sequel, but emphasized that it wouldn't be the immediate next project. The possibility of a new IP in a completely different genre (science fiction, modern-day setting, or even a departure from the RPG genre) remains open.
Given the studio's commitment to the media blackout, it's likely that substantial time – potentially years – will pass before any concrete information about Larian's next game is revealed.
