2XKO Hopes to Revolutionize Tag-Team fighting Games
Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is poised to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This article delves into its innovative features, focusing on the unique Duo Play mechanic and the upcoming Alpha Lab Playtest.
Redefining Tag Team Combat with Duo Play
2XKO, showcased at EVO 2024, dramatically alters the 2v2 formula. Unlike traditional tag fighters where one player controls both characters, 2XKO introduces Duo Play, allowing two players to team up and control one champion each. This results in thrilling four-player matches, each team consisting of a Point character and an Assist character. Even 2v1 matchups are possible, with one player controlling two champions against a duo.
The tag system itself features three core mechanics:
- Assist Actions: The Point character can summon the Assist for special moves.
- Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist characters seamlessly swap roles.
- Dynamic Save: The Assist can intervene to break up enemy combos.
Matches are longer and more strategic than in traditional tag fighters. Both players must be defeated to win a round, but fallen champions remain active as Assists, providing crucial support.
Strategic Synergy with the Fuse System
Beyond character selection, 2XKO introduces "Fuses"—synergy options that modify team playstyles. The playable demo featured five Fuses:
- PULSE: Rapid attacks for devastating combos.
- FURY: Increased damage and dash cancel below 40% health.
- FREESTYLE: Perform two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
- DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate abilities with your partner.
- 2X ASSIST: Empower your partner with multiple assist actions.
Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse System's role in "amplifying player expression" and facilitating devastating coordinated attacks.
A Roster of League of Legends Champions
The playable demo showcased six League of Legends champions: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each with unique movesets reflecting their in-game abilities. While Jinx and Katarina were absent from the Alpha Lab Playtest, their inclusion is confirmed for the future.
