Ōkami 2 Confirmed to Be a Direct Sequel, Still in Early Development
The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, IGN's recent interview with the project leads sheds some light on the highly anticipated continuation.
Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel directly follows the events of the original game, a "continuation of the story" from the first Ōkami. Addressing speculation surrounding the mysterious figure in the TGA trailer, director Hideki Kamiya offered a cryptic "I wonder...", but Hirabayashi swiftly confirmed it to be the great god Amaterasu.
The team addressed the existing sequel, Ōkamiden, a Nintendo DS title starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. While acknowledging the game's existence and the varied fan reception, Hirabayashi stated that the new sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline, effectively side-stepping Ōkamiden's narrative. He noted the differing reception to Ōkamiden's storyline, which deviated from fan expectations.
Ōkami's ending inherently sets the stage for a sequel, leaving Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey, ripe with potential conflicts and adventures.
However, fans will have to exercise patience. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, explaining the premature announcement stemmed from their excitement. Hirabayashi indicated that substantial updates are likely some time away.
