The domino set, often referred to as a deck or pack, is the heart of the game. The traditional Sino-European set includes 28 dominoes, affectionately called bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Each tile features a line dividing its face into two square ends, marked with spots or left blank. Just like playing cards or dice, a domino set is versatile, enabling a wide range of games. Extended sets, like double 9 and double 12, cater to games such as Mexican Train and Chicken Foot. Each country has its preferred games: England enjoys Muggins (All fives), Scandinavian countries play Bergen, Mexico loves Mexican Train, and Spain plays Matador.
Dominoes trace their roots back to Song Dynasty China, with their introduction to Italy in the 18th century marking the beginning of their spread across Europe. The evolution from Chinese to modern dominoes remains a fascinating mystery.
Understanding the general rules of dominoes can enhance your enjoyment:
Blocking Game
The simplest form, typically for two players with a double six set. Players draw seven tiles, leaving the rest as the stock or boneyard. Tiles are placed on-edge to keep your hand private. The game starts with one player laying down a tile, often a specific double like 6-6 in Muggins or 0-0 in Bergen, or the next lower double in Mexican Train. Players take turns extending the line of play by matching ends. The game concludes when a player uses their last tile or when no further moves are possible, with the winner being the player who caused the block.
Scoring Game
Points are scored based on specific arrangements or moves. In Muggins (All fives), players aim for the open ends to sum to multiples of five. In Bergen, points are scored when the open ends match. Mexican Train awards 50 points for the double zero domino. Failing to declare "domino" before playing a tile can lead to penalties.
Draw Game
A variation where players can draw from the stock before playing. The game's score is calculated from the pips in the losing player's hand plus those in the stock, typically leaving two tiles in the stock. Often referred to simply as "dominos," this game adds a strategic depth to the classic play.
