APKMirror Installer is an invaluable tool designed to simplify the process of installing various file types, including .apkm, .xapk, .apks, and standard APK files. If you've ever struggled with sideloading an APK and wondered why it failed, APKMirror Installer offers a unique feature that displays the exact reason for the installation failure, making troubleshooting a breeze.
Understanding Split APKs
At Google I/O in mid-2018, Google introduced App Bundles, a dynamic app delivery format. To grasp this concept more easily, we recommend checking out this detailed AndroidPolice post, which includes helpful illustrations. In short, before App Bundles, developers either bundled all resources into a single "fat" APK or manually managed multiple APK variants tailored to different device specifications.
With App Bundles, Google takes on the responsibility of managing these variants, breaking down the app into multiple segments known as split APKs. A typical release might now include a base APK alongside various splits, such as base.apk, arm64.split.apk, 320dpi.split.apk, en-us.lang.split.apk, and es-es.lang.split.apk. However, installing these split APKs directly on your device is not straightforward, as only the base APK can be installed, which will crash without the accompanying resources.
This is where APKMirror Installer steps in to save the day.
What Are .apkm Files?
As more apps transition to the split APK format, APKMirror has developed .apkm files to ensure seamless and secure sideloading. Each .apkm file includes a base APK and multiple split APKs. After installing APKMirror Installer and downloading your desired .apkm file, you can easily install it by tapping on the file or using APKMirror Installer to locate it. This allows you to view the contents of the .apkm file and choose which splits to install, helping you save space on your device.
The development of APKMirror Installer and its infrastructure required significant time and resources, which is why the app and site are supported by ads. For those looking to enjoy an ad-free experience and unlock additional features, various subscription options are available.
Issues and Bugs
Xiaomi/Redmi/Poco MIUI Users
Unfortunately, Xiaomi's MIUI operating system has altered the Android component that APKMirror Installer uses for installing split APKs. A potential workaround involves disabling MIUI optimizations in the developer settings, which should allow for successful installations. More information on this issue can be found on our Github bug tracker at: https://github.com/android-police/apkmirror-public/issues/116.
Other Issues/Bugs
If you encounter any other problems, please report them to our Github bug tracker to help us improve the app.
Please note that APKMirror Installer is designed as a file manager utility and does not include features like browsing websites or updating applications directly, as these would violate the Play Store's Terms of Service.
