Zenless Zone Zero Voice Actors Say They Found Out They Were Replaced When the Patch Notes Went Live
Two Zenless Zone Zero voice actors, Emeri Chase (Soldier 11) and Nicholas Thurkettle (Lycaon), allege they were replaced after the game's patch notes went live. This situation highlights the ongoing conflict between SAG-AFTRA and the video game industry regarding the use of generative AI in replicating voice actor performances.
While Zenless Zone Zero, developed by HoYoverse, isn't directly subject to the strike (its development predates the July 25, 2024, strike commencement), actors may choose not to work on projects lacking SAG Interim Agreements, a decision driven by solidarity and the desire for AI protections.
Chase stated their replacement stemmed from a refusal to work without a SAG Interim Agreement, emphasizing the importance of the strike's outcome for the industry's future. Thurkettle, a non-union member, echoed similar sentiments, describing the potential for AI misuse as an "existential threat" and justifying his replacement as a personal stand for actor protections. Both actors expressed surprise at their replacements, noting a lack of communication from HoYoVerse and Sound Cadence.
HoYoVerse has been contacted for comment.
This isn't an isolated incident. Activision previously confirmed recasting for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies characters William Peck and Samantha Maxis, citing the SAG-AFTRA strike. While Zeke Alton (original voice of Peck) didn't object to the recasting itself, he voiced concern about the lack of credit for the replacement actor, potentially misrepresenting his abilities.
