This week, Konami surprised classic RPG fans with a Suikoden-focused livestream, a welcome event given the franchise’s long hiatus since a Japan-only PSP title over a decade ago. The announcements were a mixed bag, however. A Suikoden anime was revealed, alongside a new mobile game incorporating gacha mechanics.

The anime, simply titled Suikoden: The Anime, adapts the events of Suikoden II and marks Konami's first animation production. While details remain scarce, including international availability, a brief scenic preview was shown:

This is exciting news for longtime fans and could serve as an excellent introduction for newcomers, provided widespread release.

The second announcement, Suikoden: Star Leap, is a new game boasting beautiful Octopath Traveler-esque visuals—2D sprites on 3D backgrounds. Set between Suikoden I and Suikoden V, it retains the series' signature 108 characters.

However, its mobile-only release and inclusion of gacha mechanics have sparked some controversy. This monetization model contrasts sharply with the series' history of premium console and PC releases. The impact of this on player experience and character collection remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, fans can enjoy the recently released Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. A new trailer debuted during the livestream, and the remaster launched on March 6th.
