Silksong's Chocolate Cake Hints at Nintendo Switch 2 Reveal

Six years. That’s how long fans have waited for Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece. Through numerous game showcases and even a seemingly confirmed pre-June 2023 release (courtesy of Microsoft), Silksong has remained elusive. The Game Awards came and went without a peep, leaving fans yearning for news. Could the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally be the moment?

The internet, fueled by speculation, thinks so – all thanks to a chocolate cake.

Eagle-eyed sleuths on the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15th, Team Cherry co-director William Pellen updated his Twitter/X profile picture to a photo of a decadent chocolate cake. Accompanying the image was a cryptic tweet: “something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow.”

With rumors swirling about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, the timing was undeniably intriguing. Nintendo did indeed announce the Switch 2 that day, leaving many unanswered questions about the new console. Did Pellen’s tweet hint at this reveal? And if so, why?

This is where the Hollow Knight community went into overdrive. Fans reverse-image searched the cake, tracing it back to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit. The recipe’s publication date? April 2nd, 2024.

The significance? Nintendo confirmed the Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 would air on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. This led fans to believe Pellen orchestrated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the cake tweet, cleverly linking it to the upcoming Direct.

The speculation didn't stop there. Fans are dissecting Pellen’s new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr, and his new name, little bomey. One compelling theory suggests “everydruidwaswr,” with its 15-character length (matching Twitter's handle limit), hints at a Silksong NPC, the Druid of the Moss Temple. The “little bomey” moniker, while similar to an Australian wine, remains shrouded in mystery.

It’s important to remember that Hollow Knight: Silksong was initially announced for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. But that was six years ago. Could Nintendo have secured Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title, perhaps even a timed exclusive? Or is this all the feverish speculation of a highly-anticipatory fanbase?

We'll have answers in a few months. Until then, let's revisit everything revealed at the Nintendo Switch 2 showcase.
