Palworld Devs Shock With Surprise Switch Release
Pocketpair's Surprise Nintendo eShop Launch Amidst Legal Battle
Pocketpair, the developer behind the controversial Palworld, unexpectedly released its 2019 title, OverDungeon, on the Nintendo eShop. This action comes amidst an ongoing lawsuit filed by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company alleging patent infringement related to Palworld's Pal Sphere mechanic.
OverDungeon, a unique blend of action card game and tower defense elements with roguelike mechanics, initially launched on Steam in 2019. Its surprise arrival on the Nintendo Switch, Pocketpair's first game for the platform, was unannounced, further fueling speculation regarding the company's strategy. To celebrate the launch, OverDungeon is currently available at a 50% discount until January 24th. The decision to release OverDungeon on the Nintendo eShop, while Palworld is available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox, has sparked online debate, with some suggesting it's a strategic response to the ongoing legal proceedings.
The launch of OverDungeon highlights Pocketpair's continued activity despite the legal challenges. This isn't the first time the company has faced comparisons to Nintendo franchises; their 2020 title, Craftopia, drew significant resemblance to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Despite the lawsuit, Palworld continues to receive updates and collaborations, including a recent crossover with Terraria.
The lawsuit itself remains largely unresolved, with patent experts predicting a potentially lengthy legal battle. However, Pocketpair has indicated further plans for Palworld in 2025, including a Mac port and a possible mobile release. The company's actions, including the surprise OverDungeon release and continued development of Palworld, suggest a determined approach to navigating the current legal complexities.
