MultiVersus is Shutting Down After Its 5th Season

MultiVersus to Shut Down After Season 5

Warner Bros. Games announced on January 31, 2025, that MultiVersus will conclude its run on May 30, 2025, following its fifth and final season. This news was shared via the game's official Twitter (X) account and a blog post on the MultiVersus website. Player First Games and Warner Bros. stated that Season 5 will be the game's last content update.

Season 5: A Final Farewell (February 4th - May 30th, 2025)

Season 5, launching February 4th, 2025, will introduce two new playable characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes). All Season 5 content, including these characters, will be earnable through gameplay. Following the season's end, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. No official reason for the shutdown has been given.

Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy

While online play ends, MultiVersus will offer a local gameplay mode after Season 5 concludes. This mode allows solo play against AI or multiplayer with up to three friends. To access this, players must download the latest version of the game between February 4th (9 AM PST) and May 30th (9 AM PDT). The game will automatically create a local save file linked to the player's account, preserving all earned and purchased content.

Real-money transactions ceased on January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (in-game currency) can be used until Season 5 ends.

A Brief History and its Demise

MultiVersus launched its public beta in July 2022, quickly gaining popularity as a free-to-play fighting game similar to Super Smash Bros. The game's relaunch in May 2024 introduced new features, including characters, rollback netcode, and a PvE mode. Despite these updates, player dissatisfaction persisted due to technical issues, disconnections, and microtransactions. Reports surfaced in July 2024 indicating a significant drop (70%) in player count on PlayStation consoles.

Upon its official shutdown on May 30th at 9 AM PDT, MultiVersus will leave behind a roster of 35 playable characters from various franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support.

MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
