Master Chief's Fortnite Skin Receives Major Update
Following significant player backlash, Fortnite has reinstated the unlockable Matte Black style for the Master Chief skin. Epic Games reversed its initial decision to remove the style, confirming its continued availability.
The Master Chief skin, a popular addition to Fortnite since 2020, recently returned to the in-game shop in 2024. While the overall reception to the skin's return was positive, the December 23rd announcement removing the Matte Black style sparked considerable controversy. This was particularly upsetting as the original 2020 announcement promised unlockability for Xbox Series X/S players at any time after purchase. Epic Games has now corrected this inconsistency, reassuring players that the Matte Black style remains unlockable as originally intended.
The Controversial Return of the Master Chief Skin
The initial decision to remove the Matte Black style drew heavy criticism, with some players citing potential FTC violations. This follows a recent $72 million refund issued by the FTC to Fortnite players due to Epic Games' use of "dark patterns." The dissatisfaction stemmed from the impact on both new and existing Master Chief skin owners, as even those who purchased the skin in 2020 were initially prevented from unlocking the style.
This isn't the only recent skin controversy. The reintroduction of the Renegade Raider skin also caused a stir, with veteran players threatening to abandon the game. Currently, some players are requesting an "OG" style for those who bought the Master Chief skin at launch, though Epic Games' response to this remains unlikely. While the Matte Black style issue has been resolved, the broader debate surrounding skin availability and player expectations continues.
