Marvel Star Simu Liu Says He's Working to Get Sleeping Dogs a Film Adaptation
Simu Liu, the star of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is reportedly attempting to revive the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reported Liu’s response to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he’s actively “working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen.”
This news comes as a surprise, following the film’s cancellation, confirmed earlier this month by Donnie Yen, who was originally attached to star. Yen explained his involvement, stating he invested time, effort, and personal funds into the project, only to see it ultimately scrapped due to the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
The Sleeping Dogs film adaptation was first announced in 2017, but disappeared from development a year later. The original project’s demise left fans disappointed, as the 2012 video game, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, was critically acclaimed, receiving an 8/10 rating from IGN. The game follows detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates a Hong Kong Triad gang, a storyline that clearly resonated with audiences and critics alike. Despite its success, no sequels were ever produced.
Whether Liu's efforts will be successful in securing the rights and bringing the Sleeping Dogs film to fruition remains uncertain. However, his involvement has reignited hope for fans eager to see this popular video game adapted for the big screen.
