Marvel Brings Back Baddie From 2008's Iron Man for MCU Vision Quest Series

Marvel is bringing back a villain from the very first MCU film, Iron Man, for its upcoming series, Vision Quest. Faran Tahir will reprise his role as Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar, the leader of the Afghan terrorist group that held Tony Stark captive in the film's opening scenes, almost two decades after his initial appearance. His return, much like Samuel Sterns' reappearance in Captain America: Brave New World, marks a surprising comeback for a character unseen since Iron Man's opening act in 2008. Vision Quest, starring Paul Bettany as White Vision, currently lacks a release date.

While initially depicted as the leader of a generic terrorist group, Hamidmi al-Wazar's backstory was subtly expanded in Phase 4. The group he led was later revealed to be connected to the Ten Rings, a connection initially a minor detail. However, 2021's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings significantly expanded on the Ten Rings' history, retroactively establishing Hamidmi al-Wazar as one of their commanders. This opens the possibility of a connection between Vision Quest and the events of Shang-Chi.

Alternatively, Vision Quest might be revisiting and reinterpreting less explored elements of the MCU's past, similar to how Deadpool & Wolverine tackled the more outlandish aspects of the former Fox Marvel universe. The series will also feature the return of James Spader as Ultron, his first appearance since Avengers: Age of Ultron, although details about his role remain scarce.
