Firaxis Games has announced a virtual reality adaptation of the recently released Civilization VII.

Sid Meier's Civilization VII - VR marks the franchise's first venture into VR, launching Spring 2025 exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. Developed by PlaySide Studios (known for The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Meta Horizon Worlds), the game will be published by 2K Games.

Here's the official description:

Civilization VII - VR brings the world of Civilization to life in unprecedented ways. The game world unfolds on a Command Table, allowing players to zoom in for intricate detail or zoom out for a strategic overview, mimicking a dynamic tabletop experience. Players interact directly with iconic world leaders, witnessing their reactions to alliances and declarations of war across the ages.

The game offers both immersive VR and mixed reality modes, seamlessly switchable. VR places players within an ornate museum overlooking a leader-specific vista; mixed reality adapts the Command Table to the player's physical space. A dedicated museum archive displays detailed gameplay achievements in both VR and mixed reality. Beyond solo play, online multiplayer supports up to four players on Meta Quest 3 and 3S.

The PC and console versions of Civilization VII, currently available via early access, have received mixed player feedback on Steam, citing UI issues, limited map variety, and missing features.

Firaxis has acknowledged this criticism, pledging improvements to the UI, the addition of team-based cooperative multiplayer, expanded map types, and other enhancements.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN, acknowledged negative reviews but expressed confidence that the core Civilization fanbase would embrace the game with continued play, describing its initial performance as "very encouraging."
