FFXIV Servers Plagued by Technical Difficulties
Final Fantasy XIV North American Servers Experience Major Outage: Power Outage Suspected
A significant server outage impacted all four North American data centers of Final Fantasy XIV on January 5th, shortly after 8:00 PM Eastern Time. Initial reports and player accounts on social media suggest the outage stemmed from a local power failure in the Sacramento area, possibly due to a blown transformer. Service was restored within an hour.
This incident differs from the numerous distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks that plagued the game throughout 2024. DDoS attacks, which flood servers with false information, caused high latency and disconnections. While Square Enix implemented mitigation strategies, these attacks remain a persistent challenge. Players have previously used VPNs as a potential workaround to improve connectivity during DDoS events.
However, evidence points to a different cause for this latest outage. Reddit users reported hearing a loud explosion or popping sound in Sacramento, consistent with a blown transformer, around the time of the server disruption. The geographical limitation of the outage – Europe, Japan, and Oceanic data centers remained unaffected – further supports the power outage theory.
Square Enix acknowledged the issue on the Lodestone and confirmed that an investigation is underway. While Aether, Crystal, and Primal data centers have since returned to service, the Dynamis data center, the newest addition, remained offline at the time of this writing.
This latest setback comes as Final Fantasy XIV prepares for ambitious projects in 2025, including the launch of a mobile version. The ongoing server challenges underscore the significant hurdles the game continues to face.
