DC Studios co-chief James Gunn recently revealed that the upcoming film adaptation of The Authority has been placed on the back burner. This surprise announcement comes two years after the project was initially unveiled as part of the DC Universe's Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters reboot. The Authority, a notoriously brutal superhero team from the WildStorm Universe, was initially described by Gunn as a "big movie." However, the project has encountered significant hurdles.

Gunn cited the challenges of adapting The Authority in a landscape already shaped by Amazon's successful The Boys series, noting that The Boys and other subsequent projects influenced by The Authority have created a competitive environment. He also mentioned the complexities of integrating The Authority with the evolving overall storyline and the ongoing projects featuring beloved characters already in development. As a result, the film's development is currently paused.

Despite the setback, one character from The Authority, the technologically gifted Angela Spica (also known as The Engineer), is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. The Engineer, arguably the team's most powerful member, possesses self-duplication abilities, technopathy, genius-level intellect, and radio-induced telepathy. The Authority isn't the only project facing challenges within the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate. Gunn mentioned that Waller, a spin-off of his Peacemaker series, has experienced some delays. However, he expressed optimism about Booster Gold, describing its development as "going pretty strong," and confirmed that Paradise Lost remains a high priority, with the pilot currently in the writing stages.

Regarding Swamp Thing, DC Studios is patiently awaiting the availability of director James Mangold, who is currently committed to other projects including a Star Wars film. Safran emphasized that while they value Mangold's vision, Swamp Thing isn't crucial to the overarching narrative of the DCU.
