Channing Tatum’s Canceled Gambit Movie Had a '30s Screwball Romantic Comedy Vibe Set in the Superhero World
Lizzy Caplan reveals Channing Tatum's scrapped Gambit film had a unique twist. In a recent interview with Business Insider, the actress, who was slated to star opposite Tatum, described the project as having "a really cool idea," a 1930s-style screwball romantic comedy within the superhero genre.
Tatum's long-fought quest to portray the popular X-Men character seemed to hit a roadblock before his surprise appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. The planned Gambit solo film was ultimately canceled following the 2019 Disney-Fox merger, leaving Tatum reportedly "traumatized" by the experience.

Caplan, reportedly cast as the female lead as early as 2017, confirmed her involvement, stating they were "gonna shoot it" and even had a planned start date. Producer Simon Kinberg previously hinted at a "romantic or sex comedy vibe" for the film, a description Caplan corroborated, emphasizing the intended "30s kind of screwball romantic comedy" setting.
The future of Tatum's Gambit remains uncertain. While Marvel Studios has confirmed the X-Men's imminent MCU arrival, no official announcements regarding Gambit have been made. Last August, Ryan Reynolds' tweet of a clearer version of a Deadpool & Wolverine scene fueled fan speculation, adding to the ongoing intrigue.
