Mastering the Chatacabra: A Guide to Defeat and Capture in Monster Hunter Wilds

This guide provides strategies for defeating and capturing the Chatacabra, an early-game monster in Monster Hunter Wilds. Its close-range attacks make it a unique challenge.

Defeating the Chatacabra

Chatacabra Weakness

  • Weaknesses: Ice, Thunder
  • Resistances: None
  • Immunities: Sonic Bomb

The Chatacabra, a large frog-like creature, primarily utilizes close-range tongue attacks. It may also charge if you maintain distance. While any weapon is viable, the Bow and Charge Blade might be slightly less effective due to their multi-hit attacks being less efficient against smaller targets.

Its attacks primarily involve its tongue, making frontal assaults risky. Besides the lick attack, it slams its front limbs into the ground after a noticeable rearing animation. The only significant attack from a distance involves a head-raising motion followed by a sweeping tongue attack.

The optimal strategy involves flanking the Chatacabra and dodging or blocking its slam attacks. Exploiting its elemental weaknesses (Ice and Thunder) significantly accelerates the fight.

Capturing the Chatacabra

Capturing the Chatacabra

Monster capture in Monster Hunter Wilds is consistent, though the Chatacabra's inability to fly simplifies the process. You'll need a Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap, and two Tranq Bombs. Carrying one of each trap type and eight Tranq Bombs is recommended for unforeseen circumstances.

Battle the Chatacabra until its mini-map icon displays a skull, indicating its final retreat. Follow it, set your trap, and lure it in. Once trapped, use two Tranq Bombs to subdue it.
