The Hang is a fascinating musical instrument belonging to the idiophone class, originally crafted in Switzerland. This unique instrument is constructed from two half-shells of deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheet that are meticulously glued together at the rim. This construction method leaves the interior hollow and results in a distinctive 'UFO shape'. On the top side, known as the "Ding," there is a central 'note' hammered into it, surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields' also hammered into the surface. The bottom, referred to as the "Gu," features a plain surface with a rolled hole at the center, which produces a tuned note when the rim is struck. The Hang is also commonly known as a handpan.
Functionally, the Hang operates on similar physical principles to the steelpan but is designed to function as a Helmholtz resonator. Its development stemmed from extensive research into the steelpan and other instruments, showcasing a blend of innovation and tradition in its creation.
