Auction Bridge and International Bridge (IB) is a classic variation of the bridge card game, representing an important stage in the evolution of modern contract bridge. Emerging from earlier forms such as Bridge Whist, Auction Bridge & IB introduced key innovations that shaped the strategic depth of later versions.
Unlike contract bridge, Auction Bridge & IB features distinct scoring mechanics. Trick scoring, bonus scoring, and penalty scoring differ significantly, and notably, there is no concept of vulnerability in this version of the game.
Trump selection rules are largely similar to those in contract bridge, although the latter refines the process with greater complexity. The gameplay and general laws remain quite comparable.
In Auction Bridge & IB, the dealer initiates the bidding and must declare a contract to win at least the seventh trick—either in a trump suit or at No-trumps. Scoring is based on the point value of tricks rather than the number of tricks alone. A bid is ranked by total points, so for example, 3 Spades (27 points) outranks 4 Clubs (24 points).
Each trick beyond the initial six tricks scores as follows:
- No Trumps: 10 points
- Spades: 9 points
- Hearts: 8 points
- Diamonds: 7 points
- Clubs: 6 points
Reaching a total of 30 points constitutes a "game."
